ADDITIONAL EXTENSIONS TO CONSIDER:

SCIENCE:   Have students bring in a button to add to the collection.  Place the button in the collection, describe it to the class.  Ask students to use the clues to identify the button that has been described. This can help make up for accidentally lost buttons and add to the variety of buttons students have to sort.

MATH:  Quantify the activity.  Measure the length of each button and make up rules, such as:  objects that are wider than 1 cm.  Measure the mass of each button with a balance scale and make up rules, such as objects that balance with 4 paper clips.  Emphasize how helpful tools are for scientists since each team can measure buttons carefully and get the same results.

LANGUAGE ARTS:  Write a short piece that describes something familiar to students:  a pet, favorite food, piece of clothing, etc.

LANGUAGE ARTS:  Make and post a list of describing words.

SPEAKING:  A student sorts buttons according to a  rule.  The class takes turns asking “yes†and “no†questions which the students answers.
